Grown in a lush, fertile valley bordered by mountains, in a perfect climate and growing conditions, British Columbia’s 700 blueberry farmers harvest upwards of 77 million kilograms (170 million pounds) of blueberries annually, with production increasing steadily. Our growers are proud to produce high-quality highbush blueberries that are enjoyed in Canada and worldwide.
With over 80 years of blueberry-growing experience, British Columbia, Canada is now one of the largest highbush blueberry suppliers in the world. Presently, our 700 growers have over 11,000 hectares (27,000 acres) of highbush blueberries planted in order to meet growing demand from buyers for fresh, frozen and processed product. The province produces approximately 96 per cent of the Canadian production of highbush blueberries, and as a country, Canadian production ranks as the third globally, exporting to the USA, throughout Europe, China, India and Japan. Blueberries are Canada’s number one fruit export. From field to consumer, B.C. blueberries are handled with exceptional care to ensure optimum product quality and high food safety standards.
The BC Blueberry Council has a strong commitment to on-farm food safety, and works diligently with blueberry growers, packers and processors to ensure that our blueberries meet the highest standards for food safety and quality.
